I Don't Need Training

The acting and modeling industy is a profession like any other.  You wouldn't attempt to be a doctor or lawyer without professional training, just because you thought you were a "natural." Even McDonald's Burger flippers get TRAINED no matter how many burgers they have made on their own at home.  Which means in a nutshell there is an everyday hobbyist-amatuer way of doing things and there is a PROFESSIONAL way of doing things -- only professionals get PAID.

So, In answer to the question "Can't I train myself (or my child)?"

Not unless you’re a highly-trained, highly-accomplished actor (or coach), you can’t!

Training is expensive, but with the right coach, it can pay major dividends for your  career. It can ensure that you are  prepared and know your craft. Once your child has passed the "cute" stage, or when adults are surrounded by other amatuers, training is the only thing left to rely upon, and therefore determines who gets what.

You should consider any appropriate runway classes, acting classes, commercial classes and/or on-camera classes. Consult your  Personal Manager and Agent, because this is an area where you will want to be extremely careful. If your child is under seven, you will want to avoid formal acting classes no matter how precocious he is.

In addition to his social security card, some states will require a work permit for your child. Check with the Department of Labor (See Industry Contacts), Board of Education and/or the department of Social Security.
